Kinetics of chemical changes in saliva exposed to tobacco smoke

Yael Dubowski, Abraham Reznick, Lauren Petrick

Saliva is the first biological fluid to encounter tobacco smoke constituents upon exposure. Thus, the chemical effects of whole tobacco smoke on a saliva model protein, amylase, are being investigated using ATR-FTIR. Spectroscopic changes in amylase as a function of tobacco exposure will enable chemical characterization of the reaction site as well as extraction of the associated kinetic rates.
